Amazonia, the new solar bag designed by Flying to the Sun

27/05/2019 ASCA® Mobility

After the Kombucha Solar Bag, the Brazilian start-up Flying to the Sun, which specializes in the development of projects using photovoltaic energy, now reveals its latest creation: Amazonia, a solar bag made from Amazonian fish skin.

Flying to the Sun in brief

A subsidiary of ERGON Projetos, Flying to the Sun works on projects involving street furniture, photovoltaic charging stations and biological tissue, in collaboration with Biotecam and the NGO Warka Water-Brasil. A project involving massage sandals covered with PV film is also being studied.

An innovative solar shoulder bag

Just like its big brother, the Kombucha Solar Bag, the Amazonia is composed of two ASCA® organic photovoltaic modules that recharge the internal battery incorporated within the bag. Users will therefore be able to recharge their phones or any other electronic device, thereby fully meeting mobility demands.

In addition to its ability to produce electricity thanks to the ASCA® organic photovoltaic film, the bag offers two other innovative functionalities:

  • Firstly the powerbank, developed in collaboration with a French start-up, uses LPWAN (Low Power Wide Area Network) technology. This makes it possible to operate a geopositioning system. Users are therefore able to identify the geographical location of their bag should the need arise.
  • The second innovation is a lighting system added to the inside of the bag, operating a small torch via a switch. It is a highly practical functionality for being able to see the contents of the bag in low light or during the night.

Sac photovoltaique Pirarucu

An important social dimension and strong local roots

Manufactured in Brazil by local artisans, the structure of the bag has been designed using wood offcuts. The fabric of the bag has been designed based on the principle of upcycling using farmed Pirarucu skin, a fish from the Amazon which already provides food and employment for the local populations.

All the bag’s electronics (powerbank, wires, lighting and switch) can also be removed and replaced if required.

“In other words, we have managed to create a sustainable object with a big social impact, which is also intelligent, connected and hi-tech”, enthuses Venetia SANTOS, CEO of Flying to the Sun.

This pioneering bag will soon be available in green. The color of the ASCA® film will therefore also be changed, from gray to green. Further proof that the ASCA® photovoltaic film can be adapted to all requirements.
